“Tales From the Member Trenches”
So many people ask me where I get all of my energy! I have always been a pretty energetic person, but after I had my kids, I noticed how run down, dragged out, and tired I was. I didn't feel like myself. Yes, I was in the process of embracing my new role as a busy mom, but I was still me and I wasn't feeling like me.
It wasn't until 2008, that I started thinking more about my diet. At this time whole wheat was ALL THE RAGE. I was adding more whole wheat into my diet like EVERY health expert recommended, and I found that I couldn't sincerely jump on the bandwagon to support this whole wheat movement. I was so sluggish, my seasonal allergies were out of control, and my belly was constantly bloated. As a fitness professional, I was so frustrated! I began to wonder, who wants to take a class from a tired woman with a bloated belly? As a woman, I was devastated! My jeans were too tight, and I did not feel very attractive! It was so difficult!
I started to read up on nutrition, and started exploring the world of whole grains. I knew I had to do SOMETHING different. I started looking at rice, quinoa, gluten free oats, buckwheat, and teff. Once I cut back wheat, and added these other grains to my diet, I started to feel better! People started to ask me if I lost weight! I had! I lost 5 pounds almost instantly! On a 5'2 person, 5 pounds is VERY noticeable!!!!
In 2012, I removed gluten and wheat COMPLETELY from my diet when my son Will was diagnosed with Latent Celiac Disease. Before his diagnosis, he was experiencing some of the same issues I was having, AND he had fallen off the growth chart. This was DEVASTATING to us. We pride ourselves on being a healthy family, and our son was not getting the proper nourishment he needed to grow. Celiac Disease damages the small intestine and it does not allow it to absorb nutrients properly. He is also a Type 1 Diabetic and a staggering 10% of all Type 1 Diabetics end up with Ceilac! Crazy, right?! So, I went to the doctor too and had inconclusive blood work regarding Celiac. Personally, I think I have more of an intolerance to wheat and gluten. I fix that intolerance by eliminating them from my diet.
I am now Will's accountability buddy! We both have to skip the cake at b-day parties, and weddings. We stick together. Sometimes we bring our own treats, and other times family will make something GF so we can have it! I ask and model all the questions that need to be asked at restaurants, gatherings, and friends houses for him to get him comfortable in this lifestyle.
One product that works so well in our lifestyle is Shakeology. It is Gluten FREE, and it is packed with probiotics ( very important for all people, but especially important for those who have gluten intolerance or Celiac.) It also acts as a meal or snack replacement, and more importantly, a multivitamin! All four of us drink shakes in our house. It REVS our engines every day with these ENERGIZING ingredients:
